Helpful tips on how to buy a puppy/dog
The Do's
- ask the breeder to see the dam, she should be on site.
- ask to see breed specific health testing on parents (just because there is a mixed breed, doesn't mean they are healthier, they can inherit both breeds eye disorders).
- ensure the animals are registered with a regulatory body. All purebred dogs must be identified (microchip or tattoo), and cannot be rehomed before 8 weeks of age (according to the CKC bylaws)

The Don'ts
- Do not buy a dog from a pet store. No ethical breeder would ever sell their dogs to a pet store. Pet store puppies usually come from puppy mills - farms that produce large quantities of puppies, and whos parents are raised like livestock for mass production for profit. BUYING FROM THESE PLACES ENCOURAGES THEM TO BREED MORE.
- In order for an animal to constitute as a purebred, it needs to be registered with a registered organization (Canadian/ American, or United Kennel club). It is illegal to call a dog a purebred, and not have paperwork for the animal. Never buy a dog with an unknown ancestry - it could be a result of multigenerations of incest.
- Do not buy a dog that has not been vaccinated, dewormed, or vet checked. Recent imports of 'rescue dogs' have brought brucellosis, rabies, and a new strain of distemper to Canada, specifically regions of north perth, and cambridge Ontario (please see news stories for reportings).
- Although we believe all dogs deserve a home, we do not believe in the breeding or buying of NON purebred dogs. WHY? Individuals breeding dogs of mixed breeds do not have the health, or background ancestry of where the dogs came from, they dont have a vested interest in testing for genetic disorders, and they only wish to make money. Ethical, responsible breeders, believe in the breed preservation (breeding healthy, health tested animals by specialist, keeping genetic diversity, and breeding to improve health and longevity of the breed).
